Review of The History Boys

The History Boys is a cinematic interpretation of the critically acclaimed play.  While it maintains some of its theatrical characteristics, it is still a reasonably good cinematic effort.

The power of this gay themed movie comes from the dialogue.  The writing is simply superb!  It it driven by literary references and contemporary taunts.  It is somewhat reminiscent of My Dinner With Andre', in that respect, however The History Boys is much more pleasantly paced.

However, one can't recognize good writing without equally good performances.  These actors, many of whom were also part of the original play cast, are up to the challenge.  These elements more than compensate for the sometimes pedestrian cinematography.

This is one of the best films I have seen in a long time.  I recommend it for all literate audiences--not only gay men.
