As with any anthology, the quality of these four character studies varies.
Anyone familiar with the term “on the DL” or “on the down low” will already know, the subjects of these short
films (TV episodes) are African-American men who lead bisexual lives with the homosexual part of their lives kept
in the closet. Of course, this kind of behavior is not limited to the American Black community. We all
know plenty of men of all other races who do the same.
However, the is a special sub-cultural pressure for Black men to fit into a more narrowly defined concept of
masculinity. The importance of the homophobic religions in this community magnify that pressure as does the
historic subjugation of Black males in the United States and its lasting symbolic power.
I suspect different viewers will have their own favorites among these four installments, depending upon their
familiarity with the character types and varied settings. For me, their power grew throughout my
