Felicity Huffman gives a solid performance in a difficult role as Bree, the pre-op transexual woman who is oddly
prudish. The film is entirely on her shoulders along with Kevin Zeggers who plays her previously unknown
son. Both are up to the task.
The films title takes on two meanings as these two characters, one of whom is a trans take a journey across the
continent (i.e., transAmerica) as they learn about each others. The film combines the conventions of travel,
long absent father, befuddled parents and longing for ones true identity and combines them with respect and
Some wonderful supporting performances add to the pleasures and insights offered by this film. For people
who do not understand the identity issues which transexuals face, this film is much better than most at informing
and, perhaps even, stimulating empathy.
