Here’s the deal: Most people will rate Hedwig and the Angry Inch much higher than I have, but I viewed
this cult favorite after having seen John Cameron Mitchell’s later masterpiece, Shortbus. Perhaps I am simply too stingy to give five films by the same director
Hedwig is a terrific character, portrayed beautifully by Mitchell serving as a director-actor hyphenate.
She is strong (usually), funny (usually) and cleverly self-aware (always).
Mitchell’s eye is astonishing. From color, composition and movement, he paints as much as tells this
rather bizarre tale. Even if you don’t find the story compelling (and I suspect some will not), the imagery
should stimulate, catalyzed by a throbbing sound track.
This is a must see film for all members of the queer community.
